artists not making a dime from sites like iTunes Music Store
[Archived in Entry]
[ Mediacentric] In fact, that sucks nearly as bad as artists not making a dime from sites like iTunes Music Store. It seems that of the 65 cents or so that the record labels make off of each download (and use to, among other things, pay people like Hilary to make sure we’re all inconvenienced with DRM), some artists make all of a dime or so — while others aren’t nearly as lucky.

Jay on the other hand has many faults and rough edges yet his saving grace is he loves to work , he loves his fans and audience, and he seem genuinely happy with his life.

How would you change TiVo?
[PVRblog | TiVo, ReplayTV, and other PVR news and reviews] People spent the weekend answering the question "How would you change TiVo?" over on Engadget. Even TiVo loyalists will admit that there are imperfections with their PVR of choice. While the perennial favorites "Get rid of TiVoToGo DRM" (which is the root of the "Support x non-Windows platform" suggestions), "built in networking hardware," "dual tuners," "expandable storage" and "sell out to Apple" were all well represented, here are a few of the more interesting ones:

[ Mediacentric] DirecTV offers the HD Tivo, but the price-point is awfully high for a “provider” PVR, and DirecTV’s current ownership is just as liable to orphan it as they have the DirecTivo. Since the satellite providers seem to be getting ready to shift to MPEG4, buying this (as opposed to leasing a PVR like the 942) is a real risk, as the odds of them doing a free upgrade of the box to MPEG4 seem pretty slim.

[GoldSounds] Now, I’m normally not one to support near-monopolies, having been burnt time and again by Microsoft’s ham-handed exploitation and butchery of the software industry, but Hilary Rosen’s fervent desire to have Apple open up the iPod to other music stores seems counter-intuitive and downright strange (even to former Record Company execs) Apple’s iPod plays only standard, unencumbered music formats - MP3, AAC (the next-generation MP3, and an open format), WAV and Apple Lossless formats. On music from their own store, they place their own DRM wrapper around the AAC files in order to restrict the rights of the user to copy and share that music - a feature, I might add, that was demanded by Rosen’s own RIAA.

Found several very useful sites and some very silly ones for hacks and gadgets. Im still looking for a something that will play the lyrics when the song is playing, a good FM broadcaster, and a simple GUI interface. Yes, I think iTunes is a little clunky. Sorry, Apple. No more pixellated, stuttering TiVo!
[Archived in Entry]
[Q Daily News] Ever since our Series2 TiVo downloaded the operating system version that allows TiVoToGo transfer of recordings, Shannon and I have suffered through possibly the worst bug I’ve experienced in my PVR lifetime — every time we changed the channel, TiVo would put us through between five and ten seconds of jumpy, pixellated video and stuttering audio. It made it so that channel browsing was completely out of the question, and every single recording would start with the tail end of the buggy behavior (since they all started with the channel being changed to the one with the program to be recorded). The various online discussion boards have been going on and on about the bug, and most users were reporting back that when they called TiVo to report the problem, they were getting either a deaf ear or an outright denial. Recently, we told some of our friends that the whole thing was bad enough to make us not want to use the TiVo anymore, and look into getting a PVR from our cable company.
