Shirky on Social Networks and Filesharing

[Archived in Entry]

[GoldSounds] Continuing my recent theme of social networks, trust, searching and filesharing I present an article by Clay Shirky. He describes the technological and social effects of the RIAA’s strategies against file-sharing: by attacking some of the few nodes that make a large number of files accessible for most of the time, they have sufficiently weakened the system that users are angry, both at Kazaa (for example) and the RIAA.

Klart skepp

[Spontaneous Monotony] Just when I thought the dark side might be winning their war against the internet, I came across this fax from thepiratebay taunting one of the so-called law enforcement agencies (the self-titled ‘Web Sheriff’) about the redesign of said BitTorrent site. It’s not a one-off either- they have an entire section of their site dedicated to humiliating anyone who tries to intimidate them: take this quote as an example:

BitTorrent Search Engine

[Archived in Entry]

[T. Longren: Certified & Decorated] Whiz kid inventor Bram Cohen and a small cadre of developers and entrepreneurs are in the final stage of launching an advertising-supported search engine dedicated to cataloging and indexing the thousands of movies, music tracks, software programs and other files for download over Cohen’s popular BitTorrent protocol.

For-profit music distribution industry fundamentally redundant

[Archived in Entry]

[GoldSounds] In an article (via Furdlog) on the fabulously-titled field of “Rockonomics”, Slate magazine summarises the findings of Princeton researchers Alan Krueger and Marie Connolly (PDF), who have analysed the various revenue streams of pop and rock artists over the last three decades.

Major Torrent Site Closed

[Archived in Entry]

http://www.longren.org [T. Longren: Certified & Decorated] It’s only a couple minutes in length. And in the background they have the EliteTorrents site showing with a copy of Star Wars Revenge of the Sith up, ready to be downloaded. Digital Warfighter has the text of the FBI message, incase the site isn’t even accessible soon.

MPAA, RIAA - You Need to Move Along

[Archived in Entry]

[benoneill] torrent files is also a little concerning to me. In the UK, where we are free from the guilty until proven innocent system used in America with the help of the DMCA, under the law it is perfectly legal to host a .torrent file as you are not hosting or distributing any copyrighted material.

Let’s Push Music Forward

[Archived in Entry]

This is Martey Dodoohttp://www.marteydodoo.com [This is Martey Dodoo] So I represent nobody but myself when I say this: I will not write about any piece of music unless I have unlimited access to a portable version of it, renderered in either the CD, MP3 or vinyl format. I have broken this private rule a few times, when I cared especially for the artist, and I think those were stupid, weak lapses. No more.

Stand Up (to the RIAA)

[Archived in Entry]

BLUEPEAR RADIOhttp://bluepear.org [BLUEPEAR RADIO] The copy protection on the new Dave Matthews Band record is causing a stir even as the disc’s lyrics offer a faint whiff of anti-corporate sentiment (urging listeners to “wake up” and beware “the man with the bomb in his hand”). It seems that some Windows users are having a bit of a problem getting the songs from their disc to their iPod or other portable mp3 device.

[Archived in Entry]

http://www.tvsquad.com [TV Squad] Wisteria Lane won't be seeing the Mary Kay pink cadillac anytime soon, because Christian groups protested the firm's plan to push it's products on the ABC series Desperate Housewives. Apparently, for Mary Kay, it's "God first...career third," so I don't see how they expected the Housewives gig to work, anyway.

First Portable DVR in the U.S.

[Archived in Entry]

[~Tech Angel~] Echostar has announced that they will release the first portable DVR (a spinoff of the Archos AV700) in the U.S. later on this summer.  The product will be called the PocketDish and will store audio, photos and TV content.  It will be able to download a full-length movie from an EchoStar DVR in less than ten minutes.  With up to a 40 GB hard drive, it can store 180 hours of standard tv or 25 hours of HD content.  It will come in three different screen sizes, 2-inch, 4-inch, and 7-inch.

Moviegoers staying home

[Archived in Entry]

[~Tech Angel~] However, I do believe that DVDs have made a big impact on movies.  There have been many times where we've decided not to go see a movie simply because we were on the fence and knew it would be out on DVD in a couple of months anyway.  With the decreased amount of time between theatrical release and the DVD release, this will happen more and more with moviegoers.  I remember when it used to take a year or so for movies to come out and that was the deciding factor in going to go see an "on-the-fence" movie.

FCC's broadcast flag plans get flagged down

[Archived in Entry]

[TV Squad] On Friday, the U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that the FCC did not have the authority to prohibit the manufacture of computer and video hardware that doesn't have copy protection, known to many as the nefarious "broadcast flag." Barring an overturn by a higher court, this ruling means that provision for a broadcast flag must come from Congress, not the FCC. If the FCC were allowed to continue with their plans, it would've meant that future PVR developers would have to get permission from the FCC and/or Hollywood before building high-definition versions of TiVo, for example.

nice silent fans for my epia M-II 10000 nehemia

[Archived in Entry]

malformed.org does the blog thing[ malformed.org does the blog thing] The fan that came with my epia (from idotpc) was really loud, so I decided that I needed to replace it. After doing a bunch of searching around, it seemed that some of the best were from silenx.com. I got two of the 40mm ones, and accidentally got a 60mm one as well (50mm is what I wanted, but they don’t sell that).

DVR on the go!!!!!

[Archived in Entry]

[Blog-A-Rama] The device’s real strengths are its versatility and its bevy of connectivity options. It performs direct video recording from most sources (TV, DVD player, VCR, cable box, or satellite receiver) via the included Archos TV Docking Pod, and it offers a TV output for watching your recordings on a full-size screen. We’ve seen the video quality on the device and on a high-quality TV, and it looks very good. Other functions include music playback and photo viewing.

Nielsen to measure time-shifted viewing

[Archived in Entry]

[TV Squad] Nielsen Media Research will begin measuring both time-shifted viewing as well as video-on-demand audience numbers beginning mid-2006.  The move is no-doubt part of the panic ensuing among television ad buyers whose commercials are being sped through via devices such as TiVo and other DVRs. The move will require a major technology upgrade on Nielsen's part but will ultimately rely on audio tags embedded within programming. That component, though, will be dependent on producers of older shows (think PBS programs or Bob Newhart Show reruns) to put those tags into their programming.

Why people pirate music and don’t care

[Archived in Entry]

[GoldSounds] Following on from my earlier rant post about why it’s hard to make money as an artist, I was inspired by yet another insightful mini-article at ArsTechnica. The premise of the article (based on an LA Times article that requires registration to view) is that the US FBI is reluctant to prosecute P2P copyright violators. Specifically, author Charles Jade finishes with the following paragraph:
