Brakhage

[Archived in Dvd Video Format, Entry]

Brakhage Bryant on 2003/02/19:

„Despite Brakhage's misgivings about the video format, I'm happy to know that in the very near future thousands of people who wouldn't otherwise encounter his work will be exposed to it on DVD courtesy of Criterion's forthcoming By Brakhage collection. (No, I will not stop flogging this release. To my mind, it's one of the most significant DVD releases to date.“

Some slightly related:

Fred Camper's Comments on the Criterion DVD of Stan Brakhage films, "by Brakhage"

„The work began with new fine grains (for the black and white films) and interpositives (for the color films) struck by Western Cine (now CinemaLab, Inc.) from the internegatives Brakhage has been printing from for decades. At the time the new fine grains and interpositives were made Western Cine, which had been Brakhage's lab for a half-century, his entire filmmaking life, was still being run by its founder, John Newell, who unfortunately died only a few months before Brakhage; Brakhage died on March 9, 2003. The transfers were made at a high-end telecine facility, Nice Shoes , and the person who did them, Chris Ryan, had been a student of Ken Jacobs's at the State University of New York at Binghamton and knew Brakhage's work.“

Full Alert Film Review: Brakhage (1998)

„Properemphasis is given to Brakhage as a teacher and lecturer, but not as a writer. You wouldn't know from the film that "Metaphors on Vision" is one of thekey texts in avant-garde film aesthetics and that its opening paragraph isprobably the most quoted passage in all writing by and about avant-gardefilmmakers. Nor would you know that books have played a major role in Brakhage'slife from childhood onwards, and that he frequently speaks of the influencewriters--Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein, for example--have had on his workas a film artist. These are some of the phases of his personal, mental andartistic life that a fuller biographical treatment would include, and thatwould expand and deepen an appreciation of the man and what he has done.“

Chicago Reader Movie Review

„Most of Brakhage's films include within them the story of their own making. Painting over photographed imagery of the birth of his daughter Neowyn in the 1961 Thigh Line Lyre Triangular, he captures his subjective seeing at that moment; placing his fingers diagonally in front of the lens in the 1964 Song 7, he mimics the complex urban spaces of San Francisco seen behind them. Such works define Brakhage's filmmaking process far more clearly and explicitly than Shedden's charming footage of him poking his camera lens into a stream.“
