„Despite Brakhage's misgivings about the video format, I'm happy to know that in the very near future thousands of people who wouldn't otherwise encounter his work will be exposed to it on DVD courtesy of Criterion's forthcoming By Brakhage collection. (No, I will not stop flogging this release. To my mind, it's one of the most significant DVD releases to date.“

Nor would you know that books have played a major role in Brakhage'slife from childhood onwards, and that he frequently speaks of the influencewriters--Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein, for example--have had on his workas a film artist. „Most of Brakhage's films include within them the story of their own making. Painting over photographed imagery of the birth of his daughter Neowyn in the 1961 Thigh Line Lyre Triangular, he captures his subjective seeing at that moment; placing his fingers diagonally in front of the lens in the 1964 Song 7, he mimics the complex urban spaces of San Francisco seen behind them.
