First Portable DVR in the U.S.

[~Tech Angel~] Echostar has announced that they will release the first portable DVR (a spinoff of the Archos AV700) in the U.S. later on this summer. The product will be called the PocketDish and will store audio, photos and TV content. It will be able to download a full-length movie from an EchoStar DVR in less than ten minutes. With up to a 40 GB hard drive, it can store 180 hours of standard tv or 25 hours of HD content. It will come in three different screen sizes, 2-inch, 4-inch, and 7-inch.

[Darknet] Interview: Andy Wolfe, former CTO, ReplayTV: I think that cox is one of the corporate players that has jumped into the market that replay tv would have served. They are not providing as much as replay tv would have provided but they supply enough that for the short term I think it will keep most customers happy and limit the market for others within cox's customer base. One of the things that they did with the setup box is the adding of a sata connector to allow the customer to increas the storage of the DVR. The other was having a copy to vcr option so that you could transfer programming to an analog vhs tape.

For some series that require context to get emotionally involved in the show, downloading old episodes let new potential viewers catch up and become regular viewers, so in some ways it stimulates more viewing as opposed to hurting their investments.

They’re not really giving a lot of details out, but what we do know is there will be three different sized versions of the device with 2-inch, 4-inch and 7-inch screens. Storage will be up to 40GB, none of which will be transferrable anywhere else convenient like say, your computer.
