Indies Mobilize Against Screener Ban
Mary Hodder on 2003/10/02:
„So the MPAA announced they were no longer going to send copies of movies to Oscar members and other award screeners, because they fear piracy. Basically, the MPAA has been sending all the films on VHS/DVD to members in order to vote on the nominations. Small indie type films that get nominated are often inaccessible to older Oscar members because they play in obscure theaters or have short runs. The MPAA wants to stop sending...“

„Basically, the MPAA has been sending all the films on VHS/DVD to members in order to vote on the nominations. Small indie type films that get nominated are often inaccessible to older Oscar members because they play in obscure theaters or have short runs. The MPAA wants to stop sending out these film copies, because of internet piracy fears, but the indie producers and directors say this ban will hurt small filmmakers, while the big ones, backed by the incumbents, who have their movies on a lot of screens, will most likely be seen by members of the Academy (why does it feel so ridiculous, typing "members of the Academy"?).“http://journalism.berkeley.edu/projects/biplog/archive/ 001159.html - Cached

„On Tuesday, September 30th, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) announced a ban on "for your consideration" VHS and DVD copies of feature films. While we support the MPAA's desire to curtail pirating - the stated cause for the ban - our group believes that this untimely move will greatly threaten the ability of a diverse group of films (chief among them independents) to be seen by the majority of members of the Academy. „Last year, the MPAA antipiracy department discovered that of the 68 titles sent out last year, 34 were pirated, and wound up mostly in Asia and Russia, where they were stamped into counterfeit DVDs and flung around the world. Recipients of screeners weren't engaged in piracy. But most of them, as I did, gave some movies to relatives and friends who in turn gave them to friends, who gave them to friends, and somewhere in that chain the pirates pounced.“http://www.corante.com/importance/archives/ 001485.html - Cached

„I have to think that IF Academy screeners were a serious source of pirated versions-- and my limited but real experience with downloaded movies suggests that the source is primarily Asian movie theaters lending out their print for overnight transferring-- but if they were a real problem in the first place, the availability of cheap DVD reproducing technology and steganography (digital watermarking) would make it possible to hide a code in the images of every DVD which would make it possible to track copies back to whoever was responsible, just as they do with 35mm prints. (Also, what about that DVD-rusts-in-3-days-after-opening technology they want to use for disposable rentals? Wouldn't this be a great use for that technology the studios are otherwise gung ho about?)“http://rogerlsimon.com/archives/00000408.htm - Cached
„Okay, okay, this is all better than nothing, I suppose, but I wonder, with all these security controls, why they're still sending videocassettes instead of the much superior (for viewing) DVDs. Also I still wonder if indeed the piracy has been coming from these screeners in the first place. The most natural source would be the post-production houses, which usually have the movies in digital form long before we do.“http://rogerlsimon.com/archives/00000461.htm - Cached
„Pirate tools for extracting and decrypting DVD movies were availablebefore deCSS was released, so deCSS has definitelly not brought something newto the table for the pirates. The pirates didn't need the formula todescramble the movies, they just needed to mock up one of the existing playersso that it gave them the output instead of sending it to the graphics card (atleast that's how I believe they did it). I would rather think that manypirates are mad at Jon for getting these corporations to scramble for theirguns, the pirates will be watched more carefully in the future now when theseorganizations knows that their secret is out...“http://bladeenc.mp3.no/articles/decss.html - Cached
