Interesting linux stuff at cnet

[Archived in Entry, Vhs Vs Dvd]

drunkenbatman on 2004/01/22:

„So if Linux makes massive inroads on the desktop, does that help or hurt a company like Apple? IIRC, economic theory would say markets generally can support two competing standards: VHS vs DVD, CD vs cassette, etc. So would Apple be a 3rd standard (linux & windows being the other 2), or will it ride on top of Linux, as an uber-brand, or will it get creamed. Should be interesting.“

Desktop Linux backer gets new CEO

„Let's have a ban on the phrase "Linux on the desktop" and replace it with "Linux on the corporate desktop" and "Linux on the home desktop". Once we've done this we can firmly say that Linux is ready for the corporate desktop and Linux is not ready for the home desktop without contradiction. It also helps us know what to pay attention to and what to ignore; e.g.“

Windows Media on Linux? That's easy!

„Network World Fusion has an article entitled Windows Media on Linux and Unix? It says someone is about to come out with a player that will allow Windows Media to be played on Linux and Solaris. So what? I've been doing this for a LONG time using MPlayer .“

Load balancers

„Combined with the ultra-fast CPUs available today, you've got a really flexible solution that can push just as much data as the ASIC-based hardware products from Cisco and Foundry. F5 is still basically just a PC in a fancy case that F5 designed to make their product _look_ like a switch.. It's sort of like the load balancing world is coming full circle with products like ZXTM and the freeware Linux projects that let us get back to leveraging cheap commodity hardware to power these services.“

Re: Microsoft Lowers Prices To Compete with Linux in Asia

„Microsoft is poised to offer a lower-priced, scaled-down version of its Windows XP and Office XP software to compete more effectively in Thailand -- and similar developing markets -- against the threat of open-source software. The Redmond, Washington-based company is hoping that by lowering prices and thereby releasing more legitimate software into markets like Thailand -- where rampant piracy often hides the benefits of legal software -- the company will be able to fend off the popularity of Linux.“

The Ivy Occasional: META Archives

„IIRC, I went off to Case Western for a year and a half (Fall 1988-Fall1989), got suspended for a semester and started work at Kinko’s downtown while attending classes at UHD (Spring 1990), returned to Case for a semester (Fall 1990) before getting kicked out for good. I believe all 4 semesters I was at Case, I had fiber optic connection directly into the back of my Mac SE in my dorm room. At the time, the net was primarily FTP, email, Usenet newsgroups, and telnetting into MUDs.“
