Music Industry Worried About CD Burning

[Archived in Entry]

Allyson M. W. Dyar (allyson13)http://www.livejournal.com/users/allyson13 [Allyson M. W. Dyar (allyson13)] After experimenting with copy-protected CDs in Europe and Latin America in recent years, some record labels have begun releasing albums in North America with similar copy restrictions. The CDs typically allow users to burn no more than a handful of copies.

http://www.blastednews.com [Blasted News] Music Industry: P2P is a killer, oh wait, CD copying is the killer: Bainwol said 12 percent of all households are burning CDs and 17 percent are burning more than ten CDs per month, and he assumed, as one would expect an RIAA heavy to, that those burned CDs are largely illegitimate. No chance that they’re a burn of music purchased via iTunes or a backup copy of a legitimately purchased CD for play in the car, apparently.

Last year we sold x number of toasters, therefore this year we must sell x+y number of toasters, that's how business is suppose to work. They don't take in account that maybe the majority of "major" releases in a particular year really suck. The previous four years when they reported pirating was eating their sales, they we still trying to pump out boy-bands and britney-pop, and the fans just weren't buying it anymore. Then again, I'm not too sure what spurred sales last year.
