Netflix & TiVo
[Simply Kimberly] TiVo subscribers will be able to visit Netflix’s Web site and either stream movies over a broadband connection or download them to their TiVo boxes…
Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.
[Chris Busch] Tivo in Negotiations with Google and Yahoo?: Excerpt - "TiVo has long talked about becoming the "Google of TV," eventually enabling its 3 million subscribers to search for and watch any broadcast or broadband media. Meanwhile, Google and Yahoo are investing heavily in video services."
[Fractals of Change] As the Phone World Turns Part 8 - Vonage Strategy: But, even if you are the first person you know who has Vonage, the Vonage subscription immediately saves you money on calling all the people you know with ordinary landline and wireless phones and on call handling features like voice mail that traditional carriers traditionally overcharge for.
[Gigaom.com] Om Maliks Broadband Blog » Ta-ta TiVo: Six years after pioneering the concept of personal video recording–a way to record television shows on a hard drive, skip commercials, and even pause live TV–the industry’s founding fathers are facing a unique problem: ubiquity. We’re not talking about the good kind of ubiquity, either–like Windows on every desktop and $40 billion in your bank account. Rather, it’s the kind that will likely end their lives as independent companies before they’ve even had a chance to make a profit.
[Gigaom.com] Om Maliks Broadband Blog » TiVo: battered, bruised and bewildered: Last week, I caught up with Milo Medin who in past life had helped cobble together @Home, the high-speed start-up. He pointed out that one of the reasons why projects like MythTV are taking off is because they are open source, have a community and are also addressing the market need: features which TiVo can’t roll out (like Internet sharing etc) because its beholden to its network/satellite partners. Mike Ramsey is going to be at eTech, and I hope he gets up and makes a radical enough announcement that attracts more developers to TiVo. They really need to do something fast.
[Gigaom.com] Om Maliks Broadband Blog » How to Save TiVo?: Echostar is Dish. 2Wire is about the only real competition out there once IP video takes off, and I think TiVo can still go head to head with those guys, no problem. The fact is, most of the device guys have tight relationships with distributors who have a vested interest in keeping centralized control over content delivery via their proprietary networks. Comcast loses if everyone starts downloading all their TV over open IP networks because then they’re just a broadband service provider competing with a dozen other similar services who don’t have the same infrastructure costs to amortize.
[Pvrblog.com] Newsweek: Netflix and TiVo to announce partnership, offer ...: Noodling Netflix: In the hoopla over a possible linkup between Netflix and TiVo, something appears to have been lost on investors: Even if the two strike some kind of deal allowing Netflix (NFLX: news, chart, profile) subscribers to access movies by downloading them onto a TiVo for a monthly subscription price or on a pay-per-view basis, it's unlikely the library of titles will be anywhere near the 25,000 Netflix now claims -- at least not any time soon. Ditto Netflix's plans to offer download services, which the company has suggested will happen next year.
