PVRWire

http://mediacentric.nonliteral.com [ Mediacentric] If you are a monthly TiVo subscriber, it appears that TiVo is desperate enough to keep you as a subscriber that they will lower your monthly bill by 50% if you threaten to leave due to wanting to switch to your cable providers DVR service. This will effectively drop your bill from $12 per month right down to $6.

TiVo not dead yet

[TizzyD] A CNN Money report notes that TiVo will look to break even this quarter, rather than post a loss of 11 cents per share. That’s significant in the PVR market, and it could suggest a resurgence of the TiVo platform. Let’s see.

How would you change TiVo?

PVRblog | TiVo, ReplayTV, and other PVR news and reviews[PVRblog | TiVo, ReplayTV, and other PVR news and reviews] People spent the weekend answering the question "How would you change TiVo?" over on Engadget. Even TiVo loyalists will admit that there are imperfections with their PVR of choice. While the perennial favorites "Get rid of TiVoToGo DRM" (which is the root of the "Support x non-Windows platform" suggestions), "built in networking hardware," "dual tuners," "expandable storage" and "sell out to Apple" were all well represented, here are a few of the more interesting ones:

EchoStar vs. TiVo vs. EchoStar vs...

[PVRblog | TiVo, ReplayTV, and other PVR news and reviews] EchoStar vs. TiVo vs. EchoStar vs... Proving that turnabout is fair play, EchoStar is suing TiVo for patent infringement. This is after TiVo sued EchoStar for patent infringement in January of 2004 over TiVo's "Multimedia time warping system," a suit that is still going on. EchoStar said that, on April 29, one of its units filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas against TiVo and the U.S. unit of South Korea's Humax, alleging infringement of patents related digital video recorder (DVR) technology. ... In it counter suit, EchoStar charged TiVo and Humax are infringing by making devices that use technology patented by EchoStar between 1998 and 2003, including on called "Interruption Tolerant Video program Viewing." You can also read the EchoStar patent for yourself, in case the TiVo one didn't cure your insomnia. May 6, 2005 by George Hotelling in TiVo...

Go buy a quad tuner Tivo for Fall TV!

http://www.chrislim.com [From the Misfiring Neurons of Chris Lim”¦.] Cause, Fall 2005 is going to be a hell of a TV ride. Ok, so there’s no such thing as a quad tuner Tivo. But trying to watch all the shows being pitched in fall is going to be tough with just a dual tuner Tivo. We have 3 and its still going to be tricky to watch 4 networks offerings.

Mini iPod

http://www.chrislim.com [From the Misfiring Neurons of Chris Lim”¦.] Yay! Tivo sent me my iPod today. I’m glad I came into work! We went to go look at a prospective phone system for work today and barely made it to my 2pm meeting. Fortunately, I did as I received my Tivo etched Mini iPod! I charged it up and synced a bunch of songs to it (about 968). So far this little thing is pretty dang impressive. I’ve always wanted a mini music player but didn’t want to plunk down $250 for it and not like it 2 days later. Now I’m surfing the web to find OEM and aftermarket gizmos for it. Found several very useful sites and some very silly ones for hacks and gadgets. I’m still looking for a something that will play the lyrics when the song is playing, a good FM broadcaster, and a simple GUI interface. Yes, I think iTunes is a little clunky. Sorry, Apple. I just need something that I can easily move songs in without the Stores and cutesy other distractions. BTW, the iTunes installer failed on my laptop. I had to end task it. But the software...

Tivo Desktop 2.1

[TVHarmony] Via PVRBlog, Tivo Desktop 2.1 is out and it is either good news or bad news depending on your viewpoint. The good news is that it support Microsoft Portable Media Center devices so you can transfer shows to those devices. The bad news is that it blacklists certain apps that made it easy for people to strip off the DRM encryption.
