TiVo Now Playing dashboard widget for OS X Tiger

[Archived in Entry]

[Computer Alchemy] The new version of OS X from Apple includes Dashboard, a sort of API using simple web scripting to build widgets you can manipulate on your desktop. There are hundreds of them available already to do all sorts of things, but one noteworthy new dashboard widget is the TiVo Now Playing widget.

Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.

http://toponcefamily.com/blogs/aaron [Aaron Toponce] Tiger Released: Although this may frustrate 3rd party developers, Apple seems to be taking the right approach to operating system integration.  Other useful tools out of the 200 new features Tiger offers include Automater, Dashboard, and Safari RSS.  Apple may not have the market share of Microsoft, but they are definitley playing with the big boys.  Apple is once again, and as always, redefining the way we interact with the OS.  It will be interesting to see what tools and software is copied in the next edition of Windows.

Writing (Phil Gyford)http://www.gyford.com/phil/writing [Writing (Phil Gyford)] Ten days of Tiger: Otherwise it’s too confusing a choice for users (particularly this user) to make quickly: “I’m back after manually setting my status to ‘Away’… now, do I set the status back to ‘Available’, or am I going to play some music soon, so shall I set it to ‘Current iTunes Track’?” It’s putting two axes of data in the same place (something I’m sure user-interface gurus can phrase in much more impressive jargon). The fact that once-iChatStatus-using friends have stopped displaying iTunes information in their status messages since upgrading makes me think I’m not alone in finding Apple’s implementation clunky.

BostonGeekhttp://www.bostongeek.com [BostonGeek] Xbox 360: Revealed: It is hard to distinguish the color yet. Looks silver most of the time, but white sometimes… I have no idea, but it would certainly look nice connected to a 30″ Apple Cinema Display… and hey, since the Xbox is running a Power-PC based processor, they are practically cousins.

[Striderweb] Widgety Hackery: (You can also use BBEdit if you have it.) If you don’t have TextWrangler, go download it — it’s free! (Truly, this is one of those programs that Apple should just stick on every Mac at the factory!) We’ll be using grep, but don’t worry if you’re not familiar with it, I’ll walk you through it all. (The reason I insist on the two programs listed above is that there are different variations of grep from application to application.

Forever Geek Nerds Are For Dorks[Forever Geek Nerds Are For Dorks] Whoops! Apple reinvents ActiveX: My iBook weeps at the thought, but it looks like Tiger's Dashboard may be playing understudy for ActiveX. You can read more in this article from Wired.

http://www.cynics.info  jim's: Our initial thinking was there can only be one [Xbox 360 SKU], but you know, that just limits options,” says Allard. “I don’t wanna think that way. If Steve Jobs thought that way, iPod sales would have [plateaued] because there’s a finite market for people that want 20GB white things that play music at a price point that’s above $200. And that’s all he could do with iPod.” Elsewhere in the article, Allard explains that after “lots of color studies,” the company chose a white and metal design based partially on “consumer preference and value.

Om Malik’s Broadband Blog » Apple is as predatory as Microsoft: Charlie, I didn’t mean to imply that Apple has broken the law. To me, this is a matter of corporate conscience, and appreciation toward their developer community - without which any operating system is dead in the water. While there’s always the risk of the OS “baking in” your product, I can honestly say that Konfabulator doesn’t seem like an obvious or even particular useful feature to bake in. I remember feeling the same way when Microsoft baked in Stacker-like functionality although I wasn’t surprised when they baked in QEMM-like functionality.

http://www.danshockley.com  Dan Shockley's Weblog: Not only have no worms for Mac OS X (Apple's operating system) been released, he even describes that non-worm attacks have been increasing on OTHER operating systems. Basically, he points out that security vulnerabilities have been discovered by a company that sells security products (and FIXED by Apple). There are no successful attacks described, and certainly nowhere in the article is a Mac OS X-attacking worm described. Therefore, the headline seems to be indicating some fantasy alternate universe in Chris Jenkins mind, not the article it precedes.
